Whistling Bird directly preceded and inspired the Post Apocalyptic Tattoo series. In 1998, and for a few years prior, a lot of information began to come out about transgenic food, especially where animal DNA is combined with plant DNA to make the fruits and vegetables more resistant to bacteria, pests and rot. I was and still am worried that the introduction of animal genetics in plants could bring major health problems for humans consuming those foods some time in the not too distant future. Add to this what we already knew at that time about air and water pollution, hot metals etc. and you can get really paranoid. So I made Whistling Bird, a Disneyfied representation of a Blue Bird that is genetically modified through the introduction of the DNA from a laundry soap container to make it a clean, flightless, cute little pet.
